TRANSFORM YOUR BODY AND HEALTH SUPER NATURALLY
“Just because someone looks great on the outside, doesn’t mean they are healthy on the inside. Health changes can happen to anyone at anytime, even world class athletes”. – Mari-Ann Drevvatne, AKA The Nordic Goddess
Somehow, most people believe that health and fitness professionals are “untouchable”. They always look great and feel amazing! They never have aches, pains or other health challenges. I am here to share with you that what you see on the outside doesn’t always match what’s going on, on the inside. Just because someone “looks good”, doesn’t mean they “feel good” or are healthy on the inside.
Everything accumulates in the body over time and the health of a person can change very quickly. Here is my personal story. I hope it will inspire you to living your greatest life, taking great care of your health, showing you what is possible through sometimes sheer determination and will power.
I was born and raised in Norway. I had chronic bronchitis and pneumonia every spring and fall through many of my childhood years. I was given lots and lots of antibiotics that really did a number on my health as well as my gut, except I didn’t know this until much later in life…The first signs of all the antibiotics was around the age of 22, after being diagnosed with exercise induced bronco spasms (Asthma).
I did lots of running, when I was a teenager and slowly built it up to running half marathons. Being in shape and exercising definitely helped my immune system get stronger during this time. I did more and more training, becoming a great “all round athlete” competing in Olympic Style Re-Curve Archery, Horseback riding, running, swimming, biking and hiking the tallest mountains in Norway. I was also introduced to bodybuilding and was one of the only women at the time visiting my local health and fitness club in my home town of Sandefjord, Norway. Life, as well as my health seemed to be going great…
As a very adventurous person, I felt drawn to traveling around the world, starting work in the cruise ship industry when I was only 19 years old. The world was my “oyster”. I had lots of fun exploring all the great destinations, meeting people from all around the world. With all the long hours, mingling with lots of people who brought numerous colds and viruses aboard, I was not immune or untouchable and was given more antibiotics every time I got a cold, just so I could get through my work hours and recover quicker. At least, so I was told…
After 5 years at sea, my health started deteriorating and I was getting sick more often. My pneumonia and bronchitis was back in full force. I was considering getting off the ships, taking care of my health. I was also in love and moved to Canada to be with my husband, at the time. I was 22 years old and started seeing a naturopath in the Vancouver area. He shared that I was showing the same health problems of someone who was 40 years old! That message definitely scared me!! I was told my body was FULL of candida, even in my blood stream. Amazing, what antibiotics can do to a person… I changed my diet and learned all about the “candida diet” and how to get rid of all the yeast..I was really tired, fatigued and had tons of food sensitivities. It took me almost 2 years to regain my health and energy…
At 26 years of age, while I worked in a couple of different fitness clubs in the fitness industry, I was in a car accident, that left me in chronic pain for 4 whole years. I was told by medical professionals that I would never go back to being a trainer and that I would have to re-educate myself and do something else with my life. I was given tons of strong pain killers. After taking them for a while, I found myself heading to the gym with “pepto-bismol” in my gym bag! Nice and healthy, huh?:)
Diagnosed with a herniated disc in my lower back combined with lots of soft tissue injuries including whiplash injuries and neck pain. I almost lost all strength in my right leg several times when my back “went out”. Just picking up laundry could set me off in the wrong direction…
I made it my mission to learn how to heal my own body from aches, pains and inflammation. I studied muscle balance and function training. I had tons of physical therapy, hours and hours of traveling back and forth to doctor’s offices, physiotherapy, Canadian Back Institute, Pain specialists, Nerve specialist, Acupuncture, massage, chiropractors. You name it, I did it….
All the therapy took it’s toll – I just needed to get away from it all. Venturing back to sea, this time, working in the 6 star ultra luxury cruise ship expedition market with my x-husband, traveling all around the world. It was a great experience, helping take my mind off all the pain. It was rough on my x-husband too, who even had to help me get dressed at times. I was unable to go dancing and do other “everyday” activities that everyone seems to take for granted. Everything was a “we’ll have to wait and see how I feel that day approach”. I did my exercises aboard meticulously, visited my therapists in Vancouver when I was back in town during my vacations. It was up and down. Some days was filled with agony, pain and lots of inflammation. Other days was definitely a lot better.
After another 5 years at sea, September.11th hit and my x-husband and i both found ourselves without work as we had been hired as the inaugural team for Silversea cruise lines. We headed back to Vancouver where we had purchased a beautiful new condo. Our mortgage had to be paid and I headed back into the fitness industry, determined to make it work and opened up my own personal training business. I was unable to demonstrate all the exercises and had to explain them verbally to my clients. I discovered that I was able to help a lot of my clients with my newly acquired knowledge of working around “aches, pains and injuries”.
Slowly but surely, my body became stronger again. It also helped that I was doing lots and lots of therapy on the side. I learned what made my body feel better and what made it feel worse. I learned how to “tune in and listen to the messages my body was giving me”.
I learned that life and healing the body has a couple of things in common. It’s never a “straight forward road”. It has lots and lots of “curves” with “many surprises” ahead. Sometimes, you take 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Other times, it’s the opposite way.
After a couple of years running my own personal training business, re-developing my confidence and learning that it’s possible to be a trainer after all, no matter what the medical professionals told me, I felt inspired to run my own “boot camp” and headed to California to become certified, trained and mentored by a world renowned, fitness expert. As a pioneer of the fitness boot camp industry in Canada, I had many challenges including working around aches, pains and body issues in various clients in a group setting, as well as weather as I decided to only provide outdoor training. I also continued with physical therapy, anywhere from one to three times per week.
Slowly, I felt inspired to start back up with body building which had been a large interest of mine since I was a teenager, living in Norway. I continued lifting weights on the cruise ships as well and really enjoyed the “feeling” of being strong and feminine. Clean of drugs and steroids, I am proud of being a lifetime natural athlete.
After many years of being an athlete, my body really “took to the weights” and developed very quickly. I was still in and out of pain and sometimes re-herniated my discs which left me in agony. My lesson was “patience”, while I was waiting for the pain to leave my body…it took approx. 72 hours when it was at the most severe…
When I re-herniated, I was sometimes in so much pain, I almost passed out and was unable to even walk across my kitchen floor to make a protein shake. I crawled! Getting into the fridge was a chore as I could only get to the first shelf…I was unable to open my doors or drive to my therapist. My x-husband was often traveling and out of town when this happened and I had very little to no support or help. I was offered strong pain medications like “Tramadol” and “Tylenol3’s” from my Doctor and I chose not to take them and dealt with the pain instead as I wanted to avoid all the dangerous side effects. I also did not want to become addicted to them…
I needed a goal to help me stay on course and started training towards my first bodybuilding competition. It was a lifelong dream of mine to compete in the Olympia in Natural Bodybuilding and make it to the world championships. I had to make it to the “top 3” in the Canadian Nationals to get there. That was my only goal when I competed nationally in Canada. My dreams were fulfilled. I headed to Thessaloniki, Greece to represent Team Canada.
My next chapter in my life was a very stressful divorce and a broken heart, I moved far away and left all my clients behind in order to heal from everything. After my move, to a small town with 5000 people in the only dessert in Canada, I owned an acreage property without a house. During this time, I reconnected with an old friend of mine from Norway, whom I had not seen for over 20 years, spending the next 5+ years in a long distance relationship. This relationship helped me heal in so many different ways and I realized that everything happens for a reason.
Immediately after my move and my divorce, I was “bed-ridden” for 5 whole months in back pain and could barely walk. I puked my guts out for an entire month while I was healing from the very toxic relationship I had with my x-husband. I was very lucky to find an amazing and very gifted chiropractor who helped me get back on my feet. He was a sports medicine guy and had come to my town to retire, when he realized it was a bit too boring and opened up a local and very thriving practice.
He told me that there was a 50-50 chance that I would need back surgery and was not sure right away, if he was able to help me get back on my feet.
I did everything he told me to do and also invested in an inversion table doing inversion therapy.
It took me almost a year to get my body back on track. Then I had to move again, put everything in storage and head back to Norway to finally see my new boyfriend after an entire year of long Skype conversations.
Funny enough, my back started feeling better after my divorce and I discovered through personal experience the close connection of emotional stress and how it also affects the body. Everything seems to store in the connective tissue, forming as scar tissue over time. Deep tissue massage was amazing for releasing all the scar tissue, however, the root of my continuing back pains, besides the herniated disc was definitely emotional, created in the body, due to “lack of support”.
Having studied sports psychology and practised it early on during my competition days, competing in the Norwegian championships in Olympic Style Archery, I knew the power of “mind” training. I put it to good use during this time in my life.
I lived in the beautiful Okanagan valley for almost 5 years. During the last year and a half, I became quite sick and tried to find answers. I all of a sudden experienced extreme anxiety and panic attacks, depression, hot flushes, dizziness, Irregular periods, digestive issues, bloating, gas, chronic coughs, sometimes sounding like a smoker (I had chronic coughs for over 20 years, after being diagnosed with asthma at the age of 22!) heart palpitations, mental brain fog and unable to think clearly, numbness in my lips, frequent colds that wouldn’t go away, bleeding gums, canker sores, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) aches, pains, inflammation in my joints, skin rash, acne and excema that was not healing, occasional breathing problems, adrenal fatigue and tiredness. The list went on and on…I felt like I was 90 years old and dying…
I was eating clean, following a paleo style diet at the time with whey protein shakes, lots of “synthetic” vitamins that I bought at the local health food store, including pre-menopause support. None of this was helping me. I felt worse and worse. I went to the Doctor and told I was having a bit of anemia, that my ferritin (deep iron levels) were low. I thought…that’s really weird..I get lots of iron in my diet. Is it possible that my body is not able to “absorb” iron? I started eating more liver, more deep green collard leaves, spinach etc and added iron supplements…My health was not improving..I was feeling really sick and really tired…I was told by Doctor’s that it was “just hormones” and “just anxiety and panic attacks”. No big deal…This is part of aging!! Holy smokes!! Are you kidding me?? I AM only 44!!
A friend of mine from way back had been trying to introduce me to these premium organic super foods. I knew his passion for health and wellness and figured I had nothing to lose. Nothing else was working. I felt absolutely horrible. I was unable to tolerate the whey protein isolate shakes I had been taking for years. I had stomach pains and digestive issues after eating. My health seemed like it was getting worse and worse by the day…
I HAD to DO something…I ordered in 2 – 10 day Transformations Cleanse and Detox, extra shakes, greens and other great stuff. Everything was Organic, Non-GMO, Plant based, Vegan, Nutrient dense, Living, Raw Super foods, Free of chemicals, preservatives, fillers, binders, NO synthetics, NO Irradiated, NO artificial flavors and sweeteners. I did my very first 10 day Transformation and went through lots of flu type symptoms the first few days, including headaches and even a bit of fever on day 5. Day 6, everything started feeling a bit better and I looked and felt soooo much better by day 10, all I wanted to do was continue with my new lifestyle…We all live in a toxic world filled with chemicals, toxins and preservatives coming through our water, air and foods. 80% of our foods are genetically modified and processed, made by chemists.
I could barely even tolerate 1/2 scoop of greens (Organic Kamut Blend, Cracked Cell Chlorella and Spirulina) when I started. They left me with headaches, tiredness under my eyes and feeling more fatigued. I was surprised. I thought I ate really healthy? I slowly increased all my super foods and started feeling better. I added raw fermented foods, like raw fermented sauerkraut, raw miso, kombucha etc. to all my meals and also had bone broth from organic grass fed cows. In addition to my premium organic super foods, I ate a largely plant based diet consisting of organic produce, eliminating all gluten and dairy and also the majority of my coffee. I also cut out all my whey protein shakes and supplements, which made me feel a lot better.
After 2 years on these amazing premium organic, non-gmo super foods, My energy is soaring and I am finally ready to make a huge come back and ready to take on the world again. It’s truly amazing what the power of foods can do combined with exercise of course!:) It’s also important to know when to push the body and when to rest…
Exercising hard and often is not always the best choice and sometimes, the body just has to get the right kinds of foods AND nutrients to start the healing journey from within, combined with really deep sleep…A slow walk and some fresh air will do wonders when the body is in healing mode. Always listen to your body, take great care of it and it will serve you for many, many years to come, giving you optimal, vibrant health and well-being.
